Comment on "Obestatin, a peptide encoded by the ghrelin gene, opposes ghrelin's effects on food intake".

چکیده
Zhang et al. (Research Articles, 11 November 2005, p. 996) reported that obestatin, a peptide derived from the ghrelin precursor, activated the orphan G protein-coupled receptor GPR39. However, we found that I125-obestatin does not bind GPR39 and observed no effects of obestatin on GPR39-transfected cells in various functional assays (cyclic adenosine monophosphate production, calcium mobilization, and GPR39 internalization). Our results indicate that obestatin is not the cognate ligand for GPR39.

Acute effect of smoking on plasma Obestatin levels
BACKGROUND Smoking and smoking cessation are considered to be associated with weight changes. We have recently shown that smoking acutely increases plasma levels of ghrelin, a known orexigenic hormone. Obestatin is a peptide encoded by the ghrelin gene, which opposes ghrelin effects on food intake. We conducted a study in adult volunteers measuring plasma levels of obestatin immediately after i...
متن کاملA Natural Variant of Obestatin, Q90L, Inhibits Ghrelin's Action on Food Intake and GH Secretion and Targets NPY and GHRH Neurons in Mice
BACKGROUND Ghrelin and obestatin are two gut-derived peptides originating from the same ghrelin/obestatin prepropeptide gene (GHRL). While ghrelin stimulates growth hormone (GH) secretion and food intake and inhibits γ-aminobutyric-acid synaptic transmission onto GHRH (Growth Hormone Releasing Hormone) neurons, obestatin blocks these effects. In Humans, GHRL gene polymorphisms have been associa...
متن کاملEffects of obestatin on energy balance and growth hormone secretion in rodents.
Ghrelin stimulates food intake and adiposity and thereby increases body weight (BW) in rodents after central as well as peripheral administration. Recently, it was discovered that the gene precursor of ghrelin encoded another secreted and bioactive peptide named obestatin. First reports appeared to demonstrate that this peptide requires an amidation for its biological activity and acts through ...
متن کاملYin and Yang - the Gastric X/A-like Cell as Possible Dual Regulator of Food Intake
Ingestion of food affects secretion of hormones from enteroendocrine cells located in the gastrointestinal mucosa. These hormones are involved in the regulation of various gastrointestinal functions including the control of food intake. One cell in the stomach, the X/A-like has received much attention over the past years due to the production of ghrelin. Until now, ghrelin is the only known ore...
متن کاملObestatin partially affects ghrelin stimulation of food intake and growth hormone secretion in rodents.
Administration of ghrelin, an endogenous ligand for the GH secretagogue receptor 1a (GHSR 1a), induces potent stimulating effects on GH secretion and food intake. However, more than 7 yr after its discovery, the role of endogenous ghrelin remains elusive. Recently, a second peptide, obestatin, also generated from proteolytic cleavage of preproghrelin has been identified. This peptide inhibits f...
